Well, I see by the morning paper that the FBI has identified a virus criminal in Wales and the cops over there have collared him. He faces up to five years and some kind of fine. Good news. I think about the money that is wasted repairing the damage that those scummy virus people do and it makes my blood boil. I have spent about $100 trying to fix what they did to me and I still have only a part of a computer. Multiply that by the hundreds, maybe thousands of people who were victimized by that one virus and then multiply that by the number of viruses out there, and five years and a fine isn't really enough.

But that news story tells me that there is a capability available to catch these guys. If computers can be used to spam the whole world, steal identities, scam on-line shoppers, and even help courts convict porno people, then there must be ways to trace a virus back to the source. If the internet crooks aren't stopped, they will kill the internet, or make it as dangerous as a dark back street in a north African city. I tend to think of a virus as a form of terrorism. We are all potenial victims.
