This afternoon, I rode a bicycle five miles in 20 minutes. That's an average speed of 15 miles per hour. I did it without changing gears. Now you might not think it is possible for a 69-year-old couch potato to do that, but it's true. I watched the speedometer carefully, and if it dropped under 15, I speeded up to about 17 long enough to make up the difference. I used the stationary bike down here in the den, which cut back on wind resistance, and kept me close to first aid should that be needed. I admit that my legs ached a little, but I was able to climb off and walk up the stairs when it was over. My respiration and heart rate returned to normal after a short time, and I ate a hearty supper to off-set any weight loss. The value of all of this escapes me.
