A few tips:
1. The royal escorts hit and paralyze you so often that the only way to get past them is to have an AC of 65. This would entail either casting AC spells, if you have some characters who aren't assassins or druids, or simply gaining AC in level-ups and from items.
2. If you're finding that AC spells don't work in time, try boosting the agilities of your characters. If they're all at 30, look for some agility-boosting items.
3. Remember that royal escorts can only paralyze your front three.

> Another question: what's the point of those extra points if I can't do anything with them anymore?

At this point, they help when you resurrect a character magically.
