One of my favorite family traditions was the centerpiece that my father always made for the table at Christmas dinner. He would surround a mirror with greenery and then place a small carving of an Indian in a canoe in the center. The canoe was usually about two inches long and he always carved a new one each year.

His father started the tradition and I think my father and all of his four brothers continued it. Unfortunately, there are no wood carvers in my generation, so the tradition seems to have ended.
