I think I covered that here a while back, but here goes again. It was 1964, in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. I was attending an aerospace workshop for teachers and he was a guest speaker. There was a reception and I went through the line so I could shake hands with him. He looked me in the eye and spoke as if he was really glad to meet me. Having survived a number of receiving lines, I was surprised at how personable he was. He was very much a German, right down to the accent, but not at all like the German sterotypes we heard about during WWII.

I was also impressed earlier in the day when he arrived at the Murfreesboro airport. He came in via an F27 Fairchild, which is a large high-winged twin turboprop airplane. I heard him introduce his co-pilot to some MTSU officials. That was when I realized that he was flying that big plane himself!

He gave an excellent presentation, including slides and movies that he had brought from Germany after the war. Many of them were made at Penamundi(sp?) where the Germans did their rocket research. He was an excellent speaker, talking as if in a small group, but there were several hundred people present. He used no notes at all.
