My guess is that you need to visit someone else in the infirmary. You found something of hers very early in the game, and if you return it that should lead to a chain of events that will get you everything you want.

I apologize if you have already done all that -- the important thing is that you should hear a name of someone else who is willing to trade. You can't do anything with the gold necklace until stories about you get back to the guy to whom you want to give it.
