You don't want him to follow you north the first time.

Try leaving the valley the normal way, then waiting til the giraffe has lost interest. (You may have to go elsewhere for five to a dozen moves before he loses interest and retreats deeper into the valley again - I don't know why.)

If you've waited long enough, when you enter the valley the giraffe will not be there immediately waiting for you. If that's the case, go north, not west, and you'll find something very interesting.
