The wind was just thundering around the house and the rain hitting the windows was incredibly loud. It sounded like the house was going to fall apart any minute. As I recall, I didn't sleep very much at all that night.

The few days before the storm really kicked up were amazing... my brother and I went out to swim, and the waves were all grey and choppy and traveling at weird angles to each other. Next day it was too windy to do anything but stand on the porch and marvel at how the wind was almost knocking us over. We had to hold my little brother and sister, 3 and 1 at the time, because they would have been blown over otherwise... we thought that was incredibly cool. The next day, we decided to cut our vacation short, and left just a few hours before they evacuated everybody, which meant that we just missed the horrendous traffic. All in all, a really fun vacation.

I have a NC hurricaine experience too...
We were living in Wake Forest (n of Raleigh) when hurricaine Fran came roaring inland in '96. It was my daughter's 1st birthday that weekend and needless to say, her party was cancelled. The wind blew all night and I was ready to jump out of bed and grab my daughter and head for the bathtub. Thank goodness for brick homes! Trees were down, power and phones were out for days. I never want to live through that again!
