I don't know about US universities, but I would expect that changing course in your third year would be pretty difficult.

Think long and hard about it, Gahalia. Everyone I know who went to Uni has felt a similar thing - the sudden need to change tack, or start afresh with something completely different, something completely new...I had the very same problem. I became thoroughly fed up with my degree in the third year (it seemed so abstract - there was no application for any of the theory) so I suspended my course for a year and went and worked for GlaxoSmithKline.

At the end of my final year, I suffered a great deal of mental chafe because I still wasn't sure what I wanted to do when I finished - we spoke about that a little in chat, and you saw how wound up I was about it.

So what do I think? I think you should finish your degree. A science degree opens up a lot of job opportunities to you (hence my final year angst), and you won't necessarily spend the rest of your days working in a lab if that's not what you want to do.

My friend Matt did exactly the same degree as me, but whereas I work in a Scottish lab, he now works as a marketing layout designer for a German publisher. How disparate is that?

And look, if you change majors, there's a high chance you won't be able to sit and play with Gilson automatic pipettes all day (teh best lab toy).
