While in New England, I was informed by a native of New Jersey who married a Bostonian that a "tonic" is a soda/pop/Coke. I thought this was funny but it is apparently widely used out there. When she was asked if she wanted a "tonic," she thought they meant Tonic Water. So she asked for a soda and got Soda Water. She realized it was best to ask for a Coke.
