I've found two entrances (one near the base of the mountain, one near the giraffe), but they don't help me any cause he won't chase me. Not chasing you is a good thing. You're on the right track. What you want to do is set things up so that when you enter the valley from the east, the giraffe will be nosing around the cavern and you can make a break for the west.

Now that you know how to get in and out of the valley via the caverns, you should be able to pull this off.
