I just got one of those "forward to everybody" emails that I am sure must be a hoax.
It claimed that a $500 million dollar program in Australia had required citizens to turn in 640,000 guns to be destroyed.

It also claimed a rapid increase in violent crime because the crooks didn't turn them in, but the good folks did.

Would somebody who is in Australia, or has been there recently, tell me, is there a shred of truth to either claim?
