Maybe it has something to do with the French children's story, "The Red Balloon?" It's about a big red balloon that's sort of alive. It makes friends with a boy and follows him around, but isn't allowed on the school bus or anything. Eventually, some bullies throw rocks at it and pop it. I saw a short film (on atomfilms.com, if I remember right) about the Revenge of the Red Balloon, where it comes back and kills all the people who were mean to it in the original story. Quite funny, in a strange sort of foreign-ish way.

That's my only guess for the Lucky Charms balloons. Not that the balloon is part of a superstition, but I suppose that in that story it's "magical" to a certain extent. Also, keep in mind that I'm just speculating. I really have no idea what those suckers are doing in there.
