In other words, has the accounting profession's reputation sunk to the level of used car salesmen's or lawyers'?

No, I don't think so.

Even if it has, I don't think companies would stop hiring them. You don't see any less used car salesmen or lawyers than you used to, do you?

In an economically unstable time, do you think corporations will want tighter or looser control of their money? More accountants/financial analysts/financial forecasters/money managers,
or less?

As koaladad says, "The bean counters are always the last to go".
