I think it is OK to keep wild creatures for a short time to study them. You can even name them if you want to, but they should be returned to the wild. Try to place them as near as possible to where you find them, or in an area that is their natural habitat. Nature does a good job of maintaining a balance of plant and animal life, but it helps if we don't do anything to upset that balance. I make an exception for mosquitoes. I wouldn't give a hoot if they became extinct. Yes, I know that would upset the balance a little, but maybe all those mosquito-eating critters could cultivate a taste for ticks and Japanese beetles.
