First off, go get some sap. (You'll need it a bit later, and you do NOT want to have to dodge the giraffe all over again after running back to get it.)

You have to use that pitch black cavern (at the north of the valley) to get his attention elsewhere. Make sure you've gone completely through the cavern (map it out) and can get back in the pitch black cavern from the mountains.

Try coming in the valley the normal way, get his attention, escape to the east... and then go back around and see if you can't use the cavern to get into the valley from a different avenue.
