East of the Nile virus

I'm not convinced that the notorious West Nile Virus didn't come from some where east of the Nile River. This virus is a problem for people in my age bracket, and for people like me who are mosquito magnets, so I have spent some time thinking about it.

If a terrorist is looking for a disease that is easily spread, WNV fills the bill. Just think how easy it would be to sail along our coast line releasing infected birds. Who is going to notice a few birds flying, one at a time, out of an open hatch? Usually it's crows or bluejays, but other birds might be used. Migratory birds might be released in Canada or Central America, so that they could join flocks bound for the U.S.

And why limit it to birds? Infected mosquitoes need only a tail wind to travel great distances.

It even makes you wonder why those pesky Asian "tiger" mosquitoes showed up in such large numbers a few years ago. Those little devils bite all day long. Didn't they show up about the same time as the truck bomb in the basement of the World Trade Center?

I heard on the news today that WNV is in almost all of Tennessee's 96 counties. So here I sit, scratching my forehead and my elboy, wondering if I was the victim of a terrorist attack while I was out there doing yard work.
