Did he tell you at work? Was he, in any capacity, your supervisor? If the answer is no to either of these questions, I'd keep going back to work until you hear from an official source that you have been fired/terminated/laid off/let go/whatever. If your contract was through your agency, they should have been the ones to tell you your bank decided to end their contract with you.

Find out if you have been fired or if you have been laid off. This will be important for collecting unemployment, your health benefits, and any termination packages your former employer offers.
