You pick their sex, race, and class. Then you go off into this labyrinth on a quest to defeat the archmage Murkon and recover this lost diadem that he's stolen. You build your skill level and stats as you go by gaining experience from killing monsters. There are pools, locked doors, traps, treasure chests, chutes, and all that good stuff.
Murkon's labyrinth consists of 10 levels, each 30*20 squares in size. There are four towns and plenty of monsters and treasures. I played the game from late March to early May this year, beating Murkon with two parties. The best Murkon's Refuge player around here seems to be Commie_Bat, who has beaten Murkon's Refuge four times, if I'm not mistaken.
