Yeah, it's used as a term of contempt. Don't know quite why, though. I wouldn't be offended if someone called me a "Northener" when it was quite clear that I wasn't one.

Incidentally, where does the term "Yank" come from? The equivalent (to go by movies and TV) is "Brit", but that's just a teensy bit more obvious.
