California has an at-will employment policy meaning that an employer or employee can terminate the job at any time and for any reason. I like to give two weeks to be polite but most companies I've been at don't care that much or wanted me out that minute so I couldn't steal any company secrets. This never made much sense to me since I could have done that during the days and weeks leading up to leaving. Whatever.

Which leads me to another news story from the life of Ferrick. After searching for solid work for over a year, I got a job and quit it in less than two weeks to take a job that I really wanted. They had me out within a day because they had a replacement but that allows me to start my new job at UC Davis tomorrow. I'm stoked.

Congrats on the new job. I hope it is fun.

The usual thing is that either party has to give two (sometimes three) weeks' notice, but if they don't want to do that for some reason, there's a financial forfeit usually the equivalent of a week's pay.
