It's been done. Not just Egypt, but Memphis, Tennessee and Las Vegas, Nevada. Americans improved the design with steel and glass. Any rock you see in Las Vegas might be fake. I haven't been to Memphis since that one was built. But you are correct, they are probably safer than those tall thin targets. I wonder if anybody ever committed suicide by jumping out the window of a pyramid.
