I've been a little busy, but now it's Friday night and I can finally answer this.

Well, I had a full complement of dive gear on, which includes fins, so he could quite easily run away. Also, he had taken the thing away and put it somewhere I couldn't lay my hands on it very easily.

But really, it's because he was such a nice guy and bought me a beer once we were back on land.
