Apparently, carriages and buggies and other literally horsepowered transportation had these compartments -- in which people actually stored their gloves. Maybe no one came up with a more modern name over the last century or more (although mobile junk drawer works for me).

I could also use a dumpster-sized junk drawer -- for home use, as I just moved. After four years in one spot, my belongings seem to have grown exponentially. If I put everything in one drawer, I bet I would also find things more quickly.
Can a backpack be counted as a junk drawer?
