It's my understanding that, in essence, this is how the transporters on Star Trek actually work: they convert you into energy and rebuild you somewhere else, but using molecules from that location instead of yours. And I guess maybe your "soul" (or consciousness or whatever) is magically transported over into that body. Maybe the Federation has a special deal worked out with God.
