English law states that you can drink in private from the age of 5, you can drink in public with a meal from the age of 14, and you can drink yourself to death from the age of 18.

As coq au vin and similar foods have the alcohol evaporated out of them during cooking, they are unregulated. Other substances in food are treated exactly as if they're smoked or injected, or whatever.
