Good point. We have a few from South America, but the vast majority are from Mexico. There is a plant here where they grow mushrooms in a large building. The management had trouble keeping help because the locals didn't like the way it smelled in there. So the management "imported" Mexican workers who were not afraid of work and weren't bothered by the smell. (I've been in there and it didn't bother me. It's a clean well-maintained plant and they produce great mushrooms.) Most of them are happy with their job and enjoy a higher standard of living than they had before. They are buying cars and houses and sending their kids to the local schools. I see them at the post office, sending money orders back to Mexico. I guess the US buck goes a long way down there. I think the inside-the-city-limits population is about half Hispanic now and the local people are picking up a little Spanish. The food in our restaurants is better too.

Someone once asked my daughter if her husband was a Mexican, and she said, no, that he was from Peru. So they said, "But that's the same thing, isn't it?" She had to explain that Peru was a different country on a different continent with a different culture, but yes, the same language.
