FQ: Need help in dungeon

I think you have to keep bashing one of the locks with your sword/shovel/club, but nothing seems to work. I've whacked each lock dozens of times, but none of them open. Is there an order in which you have to use the bashing items, and are you supposed to open a certain cell first?
I haven't found anything in the empty cell, despite searching the pile of hay multiple times.
