Very few games are like those on AGL. The AGL games represent the middle ground between hyperfiction and text adventures. Hyperfiction has very little interactivity, as the player usually just reads a few pages of the story and then chooses between a few options to decide what the main character does next. It's not very interactive at all. Text adventures, as you know, force you to use a parser to type in simple sentences to control the player character. This can be annoying when the player is forced to "guess the verb" or do something that isn't very obvious.
I'm pretty sure that there isn't anything like AGL combining the best features of both game types outside of rinkworks. I suggest you download some of the easier text games to help you get used to that genre. Maybe you could download a program called "Adventure Blaster" It contains several text games of varying difficulty and hints for each.
