According to that article Dave first linked to, they believe these effects are caused by the same effect as "railroad tracks running together in the distance", i.e. (if I interpret this correctly) the sun is so far away it looks as though it's further down than it actually is. And if this seems contrary to all known laws of physics and geometry, then those must be wrong.
