Oh, it's worse than you think. Never mind being in the 21st century -- numerous visual and astronomical proofs that the world is spherical have been well-known to science since antiquity, and accepted throughout the Middle Ages and Renaissance. It's an myth that the world was thought to be flat until recently. Columbus certainly had nothing to do with the discovery, contrary to what some books claim -- they already *knew* the world was round in his time.
