A question about friendships. . .

This is mainly for people who are out of high school, although I suppose it could apply to anyone. How many people here maintained high school (or middle/junior high school) friendships throughout college (or high school)? How did those friendships change? Did you make a concerted effort to maintain these relationships? Did you think the effort was worth it in the end?
I have a group of a few very close friends that I'm still pretty close to now, but it has been really hard to stay that way. Out of the four of us, two went to college right after high school, one waited a year, and one started working right away. If you can think of any other major life issues (romantic relationships, spiritual views, etc.), we differ on those too. All of the changes have been a real strain on our friendships. All of these people are really important to me, but it's getting harder and harder to keep in touch. I've been thinking about it a lot, and I thought it might be nice to know what other people think and have experienced. The reason I targeted this toward people out of high school (no disrespect to anyone younger) is because that's when people tend to start moving away. I'm sure my situation isn't unique. What I want to know is what happens afterwards.
