I understand this was because most people are right-handed, and therefore would wear a sword on the left side of their waist. When mounting a horse, in the days when horse-riding and sword-wearing went together, you would therefore mount with your left foot in the stirrup and putting your right leg across, otherwise you get tangled up in your sword. > > > btw, This is also the reason that people in sensible countries drive on the left hand side of the road. People mounted on the left, so mounting blocks were on the left of the road, so people tended to stay there - hence, we still do. > > No Idea why loopies crossed the road, however.
You've got it backwards. If you drive on the right side of the road, then the driver gets in on the left side of the car, analagous to the bicycle and horse examples.
So, clearly, driving on the right side of the road is more natural and correct and rational.
