Actually, that one may not have been written in all seriousness. On a list of "worst analogies..." I found a bunch by the same guy that I suspect were tongue in cheek. Among them, the following:

"John and Mary had never met. They were like two hummingbirds who had also never met."

"Her eyes were like two brown circles with big black dots in the center."

"The little boat gently drifted across the pond exactly the way a bowling ball wouldn't."

They strike me as rather clever. I insist on believing the badness is intentional (if only to help me sleep at night.)
