Why is it that the most improbable things always seem to happen to me in MR?

I have three characters with no items equipped, but with WC 57 and AC 39. All their stats are at the max, so I figured it'd be no problem to go from Kaliti to level 10, to accumulate some experience. I had done it many times before.

Anyway, in something like my fifth fight, not even on level 10 yet, I manage to get two guys paralyzed in the same round of combat. It's rare enough for one character to get paralyzed, with such high AC.

So anyway, my third guy finally finished off the monsters, and I figured I may as well open the treasure chest. I had just beaten a Gelatinous Cube, so I figured I'd at least get some money out of it, to heal my characters at Kaliti. So obviously, what happens?

The chest was trapped!
A crossbolt shoots from the chest!
Victoria is hurt for 73 hit points!
Victoria is critically hit!
Victoria dies!

Lost all three characters in one battle. What a waste of the stuff I invoked upon leaving Kaliti.
