Gelatinous Cubes carry four items each (usually on level 9) and are worth less than 4k experience. Once I fought the following combination:

1 Gelatinous Cube
1 ?Slime?
1 Gelatinous Cube
1 ?Slime?

or some such thing. It's a great way to get rich without leveling up.

Also, one lucky trip to a pool will get you up to half a million, so it's possible to accumulate riches in a hurry with a little luck.

For the record, my super-strong, ideally-equipped party only got up to 85M gold. It turned out to be plenty.
