Timing issues in the Game of the Ages

I am at the castle where Blood Drops lives, but I cannot for the life of me either seem to descend the castle via rope attached to battlement, or to steal the picture from the dining hall. I can get the rope affixed to the battlement, out of sight, without a guard around, but even when there IS no guard around, I can't climb down it. Similarly, I can get the picture all right, but I can't leave with it, even when the serving girls leave the room. Help!
