You're on the right track in looking for the gold key -- although I'm not sure I'd call that action theft that you have to do before. There's a valuable item that you can find early on in the game. You've been in the right area at least once.

Then you go looking for someone else to trade with (not the sorceror yet).

You should eventually get to the password you're looking for, as you've got parts of what you need to do.
