My guess is that he uses some sort of hypnotic trick he learned in the Orient to cloud the minds of the people around him so they can't see him. Or, no, wait, wrong hero. But Superman probably uses the same type of concept: a subtle mind trick that makes people miss the connection between him with glasses and him without.
