I've become quite fond of my little bread warming friend but there is one thing that disturbs me. Why is there always a setting on toasters that burns the bread to a horrible crisp that no decent human being would ever eat? Would anyone care to share an idea?

I think you've found the "Defrost + Toast" setting, useful for items like frozen waffles.
This setting renders your waffle edible after only one application, as contrasted with the multiple toasting-chamber dunkings that frozen waffles would require at a lower setting.

Sometimes they still burn, though, just to show you who's boss.
