Er, my determiner for which side goes up is the bread, not the meat (i.e., pb&j). If one slice has a big bubble in it, through which the insides may drip, well, that side faces up.

With a large bubble, i have to put the peanut butter on that side of the bread, simply because its cohesiveness is stronger than that of the jelly (jam, preserves, or what have you). If the hole is smaller than the approximate circumference of a U.S. dime, then jelly might end up claiming that slice of bread.

If i happen to randomly select two slices with a big bubble that goes through both, i'll either put one back and find a slice without the bubble, or else i'll be really careful how close to the bubble the pb&j get (and i won't let my napkin stray too far, just in case).

In this last situation, with a mammoth hole through both slices, i must admit that the peanut butter would likely be on bottom. But since the poll did not incorporate the element of bread bubbles, and judging from all i've just typed, i had to agree that we Americans are wierd.
