GOA:STUPID DRUNKS!!!!! (Spoilers I hope)

I've gotten all the way up to having the wizard mark but I can't get through the Gate of Despair! Is there an item or a sequence I need to get past them? Or do I have to defeat the wraith in world three first,and if so how? Spoilers would be highly appreciated.
