If you're mindlessly fighting level 7 opponents anyway, it might be a good time to retrain some of your characters. I wouldn't retrain a caster till he's learned all the spells from his first class. #36 on both lists can come in mighty handy.
If you can't beat level 8 opponents, I'd say that level 7 opponents are definitely the way to go. Just remember to test the waters in level 8 every now and again.
