I'm now beginning my way on levels 8 and 9. I found that combat is much easier if I only use my Wands when I ambush the monsters. If the monsters can do something, I first cast QUIETER and two times CONCEAL. Then I attack with QUIETER and two RAZORS spells.
I have been visiting that "secret" area on level 9. As of yet I haven't even reached the long tunnel but someday I will be able to reach and even pass it.
