Yes, the Crossbow is nice as a range weapon, but you can only hit once per round with it. With Speed > 1 you can hit more than once with a sword, and once your Speed gets above 5, you can hit more than one monster in one turn.

There's an improvement on the Crossbow, actually, but it's rare even in the pools of level 10.
