Yeah, I remember hating Chimeras too. Now they're on my "kill first" list.
What's your strongest spell? Sometimes it's worthwhile to use your strongest spell that does unavoidable damage, and not your strongest spell of all. Many monsters are immune to heat, cold or poison. Try hitting the Chimeras with a couple of BLADES/RAZORS/SHRAPNEL in the first round. That should take the edge off them. I seem to remember two applications of RAZORS killing just aboot everything on level 4.
If you still can't nail them, run away from them and kill other stuff till your Sorcerers level up and learn new spells.
