There is, actually, but I can see how if you don't know what those steps are in advance, it appears like you just slap down moves until something works. And your advice (just confuse him when he tries to guess your moves) is the best advice to give.

I obviously won't say what the specific steps are, but I will say that you can defeat the wraith in exactly four moves.

Provided you have a certain weapon you need first.
