It's possible your Sorcerer isn't quite intelligent enough. At one point I had just retrained a Sorcerer as a Druid, and he had really low numbers. I was shocked to find that I couldn't teleport home from anywhere. Get yourself a couple levels, and boost his IQ. In the meantime, always kill yourself a safe path back to the elevator.
