I'm way down at the bottom levels, and I'd just like to say for the record that my Assassins do a ton more damage than my spellcasters. You don't need two Rogues, make one into a Sorcerer - they have some really sweet offensive spells and they'll learn them faster than Druids. You can retrain to a Druid when the rest of your party is strong enough to confidently plow through a really high level.

If, as you say, the first monster group *nearly* kills your party, then you're on the right level for building big experience. Wherever you are, just make sure you kill all the monsters on the way back to the stairs, in case you need to make a quick getaway. Also, make sure you allocate all your skill points, and get back to town when one or two of your guys can level up.
