I don't consider making money this way to be particularly kosher, no. However, this loophole was known long before I even started beta testing it, let alone released the thing, and I obviously didn't care enough to plug the hole up. (Which I could easily have done by having new characters start out with nothing.)

As you suspect, the usefulness of the tactic declines as you progress in the game, and larger and larger amounts of money are required.
